What those dark streaks really are

The black stripes on so many roofs are algae, and warm, damp air helps them spread quickly across shaded slopes. Moss and lichen follow wherever moisture lingers, holding water against the roof surface.

High-pressure washing would knock granules off shingles and can harm tile. A soft wash uses a mild cleaning solution at garden-hose pressure, gives it time to work and then rinses it off. It is also the step that comes before shingle treatment or tile sealing.

How the wash is done

  1. Protect first

    Garden beds get a soaking and a cover, and downspout runoff is steered away from them and the pool.

  2. Apply gently

    A mild cleaner is misted onto each slope in turn, never blasted.

  3. Let it work

    Growth is given time to loosen so it rinses away rather than being forced off.

  4. Rinse and review

    We rinse the roof, gutters and nearby surfaces, then look for any damage the algae had been covering.

Soft washing questions

How soon will streaks come back?

It varies with shade and damp. Slopes in full sun keep clean far longer than shaded ones, and a treatment or sealer afterward slows regrowth.

What about my plants and the pool?

We soak and cover plants first and rinse them again at the end, and the runoff is directed clear of flower beds and the swimming pool.
